Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) is an implantable device that helps pump blood from the lower chambers of the heart to the rest of the body. VAD implantation is a treatment for a weakened heart or heart failure.

There are different types of VADs, single ventricular, such as left (LVAD), right (RVAD), and biventricular VAD.
VADs can be used for different purposes, such as a bridge to recovery, bridge to transplant or destination therapy. VAD is a durable mechanical circulatory support device.

When to select VAD

An LVAD may be temporarily used while you wait for a donor heart to become available. This type of treatment is called a bridge to transplant.
